Foot and mouth disease
The foot and mouth disease outbreak in 2001 cost the farming industry around £3 billion, caused misery and distress in rural communities around the UK and massive disruption. It also saw appalling cruelty to livestock as they were disposed of. These photographs were taken as part of an investigation for an animal welfare charity, and actually show very good treatment of sheep having blood samples taken. Despite the proximity of infected flocks, this farmer was spared as his sheep were clear of disease.
